SALRC appoints Regional Chairs and new sheepmeat and grass-fed beef producer members on Regional Committees
The Southern Australia Livestock Research Council (SALRC) has appointed new Regional Chairs for its Western Victorian and Southern NSW Regional Committees and appointed a number of new producer members across its seven Regional Committees covering southern Qld, NSW, Vic, Tas and SA.
SALRC is an independent, incorporated association and one of three national research Councils setup to provide recommendations on Research, Development & Adoption (RD&A) priorities and planning for grass-fed beef and sheepmeat producers throughout Australia.
Johnny Gardner, a beef and sheep producer in Cavendish Vic, has been appointed Chair of the Western Victorian Regional Committee. Johnny is the Managing Director of South Mokanger, a 1800ha farm that runs 7,000 self-replacing composite breeding ewes and 400 Cows. Johnny has completed the Australian Rural Leadership Program through Sheep Producers Australia, is a past steering committee member of the sheep sustainability framework and completed a Nuffield scholarship on Reducing emissions in the Australian Lamb Industry.
Alison Southwell, a sheep producer from Mangoplah NSW, has been appointed the Chair of the Southern NSW Regional Committee. Alongside running their fine wool farming enterprise, Alison is also the CEO of Holbrook Landcare Network (HLN), a community led organisation that has been running environmental and production-based RD&E projects for 35 years for members, majority operating mid to high rainfall beef and sheep enterprises on permanent pastures or mixed farms.
In addition to the two newly appointed regional Chairs, SALRC Chair Ian Rogan also welcomes a number of new sheepmeat and grass-fed beef producer members to the Regional Committees:

– Ricky Luhrs – Sheep Producer, Moralla Vic (Western Vic Regional Committee)
– Will Sullivan – Sheep and Beef Producer Warncoort, Vic (Western Vic Regional Committee)
– Stuart Warner – Sheep Producer, Beechworth Vic (Central Vic Regional Committee)
– Luke Anderson – Beef Producer, South Forest Tas (South-east Vic & Tas Regional Committee)
– Robert Green – Beef Producer, Tonimbuk Vic (South-east Vic & Tas Regional Committee)
– Jillian Kelly – Beef Producer and Veterinarian, Coonamble NSW (Northern NSW Regional Committee)
– John Murdoch – Sheep Producer, Monaro NSW (Southern NSW Regional Committee)
– Caroline Booth – Sheep Producer, Hay NSW & Cunnamulla QLD (Central and Western NSW & QLD Sheep Regional Committee)
In announcing these appointments SALRC Chair, Ian Rogan said “our SALRC network of regional livestock producer committees are a great asset for the successful future of our sheep meat and beef cattle industries across five states. On those committees, producers provide input into identifying priorities for investment in R,D and A that will contribute to the productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability of their farms and our livestock industries”.
