Regional Chair – David Counsell
David, together with his wife Genevieve, own & operate Dunblane, an extensive pastoral property in central western QLD running a merino sheep flock of 15,000 head with an agistment herd of 1,000hd when seasonal conditions permit.
David possesses widespread experience in the extensive grazing livestock industries across Australia, including work in the Western Kimberley and South Australia, testing cattle herds as part of the BTEC campaign. Three years were spent as the Rural Lands Protection Board District Veterinarian, Nyngan, central NSW. Over 7 years with the MacKinnon Project at the University of Melbourne Veterinary School, completing a Masters in Veterinary Studies, gaining significant consulting project experience. As Program Manager for the “8×5 Wool Profit Program” run by the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research, David was instrumental in the successful completion of all projects, increasing stakeholder involvement and the establishment of a successful state-wide farmer extension network. David continues in the veterinary field providing significant input to Sheep Week conducted annually with the Vet School, JCU.
David has been a member of SALRC for over 8 years and a long term member of the Western Qld NABRC regional committee. He is a PAP board member for the QLD Leading Sheep program funded by AWI and is also a member of the northern Western regional Leading Sheep committee. David is currently leading a successful PDS (Producer Demonstration Site) program, in it’s 3rd year, the PDS is demonstrating best practice concerning maiden and MA ewe fertility in merino flocks in northern QLD. .
