The Southern Australia Livestock Research Council (SALRC) has appointed Jason Schulz as the South Australian Regional Chair, bringing extensive livestock production experience and industry leadership to the Council.
Based at Field in South Australia’s Coorong region, Jason operates a 1,313-hectare sheep and beef enterprise with his family. Schulz Livestock has a strong focus on genetics, commercial performance and sustainable, profitable livestock production. Jason also brings 25 years of farming experience and a long history of involvement in the Australian red meat industry.
Jason has held a range of industry leadership roles, including Chair of LambEx24, Carcase Showcase Manager for LambEx26 and commercial beef producer representative on the BreedPlan Advisory Committee from 2020–2026. He has also served as a South Australian Director of Limousin Australia, including as Senior Vice Chairperson, and was involved in establishing the collaborative Genetic Hub model.
Jason said he was pleased to take on the Regional Chair role and contribute to ensuring regional producer perspectives help shape future research, development and adoption priorities.
“As a committee, our role is to ensure the grassroots challenges facing red meat producers have a strong voice in research, development and adoption priorities. We want to strengthen the connection between producers, researchers and industry, ensuring research remains relevant, practical and delivers real value back on farm.”
SALRC Chair Sue Hatcher welcomed Jason to the role, highlighting the value of his practical experience and strong connection to livestock producers and industry.

His leadership across a range of industry initiatives, combined with his hands-on understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing southern Australian livestock businesses, will be a valuable asset to SALRC. I am delighted to welcome Jason as a Regional Chair and look forward to working with him to ensure producer perspectives continue to shape research, development and adoption priorities across the region,” Sue said.
SALRC has also reappointed Meridie Jackson (Central Victorian Regional Committee Chair) and David Counsell (Central and Western NSW & QLD Sheep Regional Committee Chair) for a second term as Regional Chairs, providing valuable continuity and experience across the Council’s regional network.
The appointments strengthen SALRC’s commitment to ensuring southern Australian livestock producers have a strong voice in identifying and influencing research, development and adoption priorities that will support productive, profitable and resilient livestock industries.
SALRC is one of three research councils that identify priorities for research, development, extension and adoption (RDE&A) for Australia’s livestock industries. SALRC is focused on southern Australian grass-fed beef and sheep production zones.
